Lyudmila (Lucy) Tomova

Director, Central Medical Library, Medical University – Sofia, Bulgaria

Biography

I have 22 years of professional experience across the public and private sectors, including roles in two libraries and in an international organisation for culture and education. These roles have helped me develop skills in several areas, including library services, administration, customer service, communications, marketing, business development, project coordination, and team management.

Since becoming Director of the Central Medical Library in 2021, I have been involved in the ongoing modernization of the library, including improvements to public spaces, digital services, staff training, user communication, and academic publishing support. I am particularly interested in how academic libraries can better respond to the changing needs of students, researchers, and faculty.

I am passionate about user-centered services, innovation, lifelong learning, open access publishing, and the practical use of new technologies in library work. I value collaboration and hope to continue learning from colleagues and good practices in different institutional and international contexts.

Learning Goals During the Associates Program

  • To strengthen my understanding of strategic planning and data-informed library management.
  • To learn more about user-centered service design and ways to improve user engagement.
  • To explore how academic libraries use artificial intelligence, data analytics, open science tools, and other emerging technologies in practical and responsible ways.
  • To develop further knowledge of leadership, change management, and staff professional development.
  • To exchange experience with international colleagues and consider how relevant practices could be adapted to the Bulgarian academic library context.

I am very excited about the Mortenson Center Associates Program and look forward to embarking on this inspiring learning journey together with colleagues from around the world.
