Week Four: June 22-24, 2026

As the programme draws to a close, this week brought together many of the themes we have explored over the past three and a half weeks.

Our visit to Arthur Public Library was a reminder that impact is not determined by size or budget. The library serves a niche community and intentionally considers its users and cultural context in the services it provides. This visit reinforced the importance of understanding our communities if we are to be effective as librarians. Small in size, but mighty in its offerings, the library demonstrated that meaningful impact often comes from being responsive and intentional.

Our time in Arthur also provided an opportunity to learn more about the Amish and Mennonite communities. Visiting Amish homes and learning about their way of life challenged some of my assumptions and highlighted the many ways communities adapt technology and modern conveniences while remaining grounded in their values and traditions. Lunch at Yoder’s Kitchen was also a pleasant surprise and a reminder that sometimes our expectations deserve to be challenged.

The presentations on library consortia and web accessibility were equally thought-provoking. The consortia presentation demonstrated the power of partnerships and collective action, showing how libraries can leverage shared resources for greater impact. The session on web accessibility prompted me to reflect on my own digital spaces and the importance of ensuring that my organisation’s websites are inclusive and accessible to all users.

Our final field visit was Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, which was a highlight. It was immediately evident why it is one of the most used libraries at the University of Illinois. I particularly appreciated the intentionality of its spaces, including designated loud and quiet floors that recognise users engage with libraries in different ways. It was another example of thoughtful, user-centred design in practice.

The remainder of the week has been spent preparing for our showcase presentations. Drafts, revisions, and rehearsals have offered an opportunity to reflect on just how much we have learned in a relatively short period of time.

This final week has been a reminder that effective libraries are built on understanding people, communities, and context. Whether through partnerships, accessibility, intentional design, or culturally responsive services, libraries have the power to create meaningful impact when they remain focused on the needs of their users.
