Summary of Week 3: June 16, 2025- June 22, 2025

Week Three: Libraries, Data, Technology, and Community Connections

The third week brought together classroom learning and meaningful site visits. We explored topics such as research data services, technical services, information literacy, and evidence synthesis.

Learning about Library Consortia

Anne Craig introduced us to the idea of library consortia, where libraries work together to share resources, reduce costs, and expand access. At UIUC, being part of CARLI supports shared databases, technology services, and collaborative programs. This session also made me think about Qatar’s library network and QNL’s participation in the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC).

National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)

Our visit to NCSA gave us a closer look at how advanced technology supports research and discovery. One of the most interesting parts was the immersive 3D galaxy simulation, which showed how data, visualization, and supercomputing can make complex research easier to understand.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum

At the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, we had the opportunity to view rare manuscripts and original documents with Ian Hunt, Chief of Acquisitions. The museum also used technology in a memorable way through the Ghosts of the Library holographic theatre, which made history feel closer and more engaging. I still found myself wondering whether the storyteller was real or a hologram.

Visit to Urbana Free Library

Our tour of the Urbana Free Library, led by Jordan Kahle, highlighted the role of public libraries as open and welcoming spaces.

One interesting example was the children’s Seed Exchange initiative, which connects learning, food awareness, and community engagement. It was a simple but creative reminder of how libraries can support lifelong learning from an early age.
