Upon arrival at Ohio State University, we visited the Thompson Library, which feels like the beating heart of OSU’s academic life. With over 230 computers, full-building Wi-Fi access, and dedicated subject librarians supporting research in more than 100 disciplines, this library is designed for serious scholarship with a modern twist.

As a visitor, I found that this place is so much more than just a library filled with books. It’s a vibrant space to connect with others, get in-person tech support, and explore a wide range of subjects. During my visit, I was especially impressed by the Asian collection featured in the lobby, showcasing items from Indonesia, Japan, and Korea. These exhibits are rotated regularly, offering visitors a fresh experience with each visit.

I also discovered a fascinating exhibition room titled Our Shocking Times: The Civil Rights Movement Through the Lens of Journalism, where all the materials on display come from the library’s own collection providing a unique glimpse into its carefully curated historical archives. We also had the chance to view rare items in the closed stacks area, including collections dating back to the 14th century, with some even written on wood.

Next, we visited the 18th Avenue Library, a dynamic resource hub for students and researchers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Formerly known as the Science and Engineering Library, its specialized collection now spans a wide spectrum of disciplines, including astronomy, chemistry, chemical and biomolecular engineering, computer science, engineering, geodetic science, mathematics, physics, statistics, and even patents and trademarks.

Led by Kristin Henkaline, our tour of OSU’s Research Commons revealed a vibrant, collaborative space designed for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty offering expert-led workshops, personalized consultations, networking events, and flexible, tech-equipped environments that support every phase of the research journey.

During the session, Kelsey Badger highlighted the increasing role of Research Data Services at OSU. Whether it’s managing datasets for funders, exploring data visualization techniques, or securing your intellectual property through patents, the Research Commons is a hub for cutting-edge inquiry and collaboration. And yes, even if the book you need is across the globe, OSU’s interlibrary loan system will bring it to your hands. That’s the power of a global research university in action.

The Ohio State University isn’t just a place to study, it’s a place to grow, innovate, and connect. From its world-class library system to the high-tech resources of the Research Commons, OSU is proving that the future of higher education is already here.
