School of Information Sciences (iSchool) Visit

by Ahmad | Week 2 | Tuesday | 10 June 2025

During my recent visit to the School of Information Sciences (iSchool) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I had the opportunity to attend a thoughtfully structured and inspiring presentation about the School’s renowned degree programs, research initiatives, and collaborative opportunities. As someone passionate about the future of information management and library sciences, it was both enriching and motivating to engage with one of the world’s top institutions in this field.

The visit began with welcome remarks and introductions, followed by an overview of the iSchool and its programs. We then enjoyed a series of faculty presentations, a Q&A session, and, time permitting, a tour of the facilities.
We were fortunate to hear from distinguished members of the iSchool:
• Linda Smith, Professor Emerita, Dean’s Senior Fellow
• Cathy Blake, Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
• Melissa Ocepek, Assistant Professor
• Christopher Lueg, Professor
• Lauren Ochs, School Librarian Program Coordinator

The iSchool’s distinction ranked no 1 in library and information studies by U.S. News & World Report was a proud theme of the presentation. Their commitment to exploring the intersection of information, people, and technology was evident throughout.

We learned about their comprehensive degree offerings:

  • Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MS/LIS) an ALA-accredited program with seven professional pathways, including archives and special collections, digital curation, and youth services librarianship.
  • Master of Science in Information Management (MS/IM) designed for future leaders in data science, analytics, and knowledge management.
  • PhD in Information Sciences a rigorous, research-intensive program with full support for doctoral students.
  • Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) a flexible post-master’s program for those seeking further specialization.

The iSchool’s innovative blend of on-campus and online learning using platforms like Canvas and Zoom ensures a dynamic and accessible educational experience.

Reflections on the Experience

Attending this presentation gave me valuable insights into how a leading iSchool shapes the future of information professionals and researchers. I found myself increasingly inspired, and I am seriously considering pursuing my PhD in the near future to contribute to this evolving field. The session sparked new ideas for collaboration and personal growth, and I left with a deep appreciation for the iSchool’s mission and the potential for future partnerships.
