A Great Start to the Mortenson Associates Program

Our first official day of the Mortenson Associates Program began with an overview and a detailed schedule outlining the activities from the beginning until the end of the program. It was helpful to get a clear picture of what to expect and how the sessions would unfold over the coming weeks.

One of the highlights of the day was a group discussion where we, the associates, had the chance to reflect on the program’s theme: Libraries Unbound: Open, Inclusive, and Engaged. Each of us shared our interpretations and insights, shaped by our own experiences and backgrounds.

For me, Libraries Unbound represents a library without barriers, where access is not limited by geography, background, or circumstance. A truly open library is one that maintains strong connections with its community and serves patrons with flexibility and inclusivity. For example, how do we accommodate users who can only visit the library after office hours or during weekdays? Addressing these challenges through innovation and adaptability is, in my view, the key to keeping libraries relevant and essential in today’s world.

Each group shared their perspectives and ideas based on the theme, leading to a rich and thought-provoking exchange. It was inspiring to hear such diverse viewpoints, and it reminded me that while libraries differ from country to country, they face similar challenges and share a common mission. We were also informed that there would be a DiSC assessment test for all associates during the afternoon session. I was a bit nervous but ready to take it. Let’s see what the results will be!

After the introductory session, the group also had the opportunity to join Emily and Peggy for a library and campus tour, which included stops at Green Street and the Minerva Statue.
