Welcome to the Center for Innovation and Learning (CITL)
The week began with a visit to the Center for Innovation and Learning (CITL), where we were warmly welcomed and engaged in meaningful discussions on human-centered design. This session offered us a valuable opportunity to reflect on our services, emphasizing the importance of designing with the user in mind.
Exploring Cutting-Edge Technology
Our tour of the CITL studio and media hub was nothing short of inspiring. We interacted with high-performance gaming computers, laser cutting machines, 3D printers, and virtual reality systems. These technologies showcased the potential for innovation and creativity in library spaces, encouraging us to think about how we can integrate similar tools into our own environments.
Leadership Insights from the Dean of Libraries
Tuesday brought an enlightening session with the Dean of Libraries. Her leadership style and strategies for engaging and expanding collaborations within such a large university were truly eye-opening. The session underscored the importance of strategic leadership in fostering a collaborative and expansive library network.
The Power of Collaboration in Innovation
Peggy’s session on innovation reinforced the idea that no innovator is an island. She emphasized the necessity of working with others, identifying their strengths, and building on them to drive innovation. This collaborative approach is crucial for any successful innovator.
Libraries and Sustainable Development
Clara’s session on sustainable development strengthened our belief in the critical role libraries play in achieving sustainable development goals. She highlighted that each librarian is an actor in this global effort, and libraries are pivotal in promoting sustainability through education and access to information.
A Memorable Altrusa Dinner
The Altrusa Dinner and Thanksgiving experience were truly thrilling. The hospitality of our hosts and the team made the evening unforgettable, showcasing the importance of community and gratitude in professional and personal settings.
Reflections from the American Library Association
Our meeting with Michael at the American Library Association (ALA) presented a profound opportunity to reflect on the role of professional associations. ALA’s efforts in fighting book bans, supporting international collaborations, and providing librarianship scholarships were particularly inspiring. The discussions were both eye-opening and motivating.
Innovative Spaces at the University of Chicago
Visiting the University of Chicago allowed us to see beautifully designed spaces that inspire collaboration and creativity in library settings. These spaces are thoughtfully crafted to foster a collaborative atmosphere and spark innovative thinking.

Librarians in Marketing and Advertising
Our visit to Upshot Marketing Agency and the presentation by Liz Aviles introduced us to new roles librarians can play in marketing and advertising. Liz’s presentation was filled with valuable lessons, demonstrating how librarians can leverage their skills in these fields. From her presentation, I learnt that as a librarian don’t be just another brick on the wall.

Inclusive Services at Chicago Public Library
Finally, our visit to the Chicago Public Library’s YouMedia section and Children’s section provided insightful ideas on creating inclusive services for all library users. These spaces are designed to accommodate diverse user needs, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the library’s offerings.
This week of exploration and learning has been profoundly enriching, equipping us with new insights and ideas to implement in our own libraries. The emphasis on human-centered design, collaboration, sustainable development, and innovative spaces will undoubtedly shape our future initiatives.
