I remember the day I arrived at Newman Hall. It was welcoming and warm. Every moment here was beautiful. I met friends from different countries around the world and heard diverse stories. Listening to stories from people with different backgrounds changed my perspective. The past month, reflecting on the role of libraries in a changing world, has been incredibly valuable. The lectures were excellent as well.
While preparing for the final presentation, I reflected on the sessions and library visits over the past month. Previously, I had only thought about the work we do at our library, but now I could consider what libraries can do for the community and what our national library can do for the people. One thing that particularly impressed me here was the services provided by libraries for all generations, from children to seniors. I believe these services are what draw more people to the libraries.

When thinking about the future of libraries, I used to imagine libraries equipped with cutting-edge technology. Our library also invests a lot of time and budget to incorporate advanced technology in response to the evolving times. However, what I saw here is that it is not technology but people who drive change. Human empathy, emotional exchange, and communication are what help libraries grow. I realized that what library users expect from librarians is not advanced technology but interaction and empathy. In an era of increasing digital disconnection, they want someone to guide them along.

Seeing professionals in their fields made me reflect on my work attitude. I learned a lot from watching them take pride in their work. I believe that working diligently in one’s position is the driving force behind the American library field. When I return to Korea, I will apply what I have learned here and become a leader who drives change in the library.

P.S. Dear my friends from the 2024 Mortenson Center: Thank you for all your support during this time. The past month with you has been unforgettable. Let’s keep doing our best in our own countries! I’m sure we’ll meet again at another international gathering. Wishing you all the best in your future. Love you all. And… we did it!!
