Reflection on My Week Before Last in the Mortenson Center 2023 Program

The week before last in the Mortenson Center 2023 program was a whirlwind of experiences and learning opportunities. We were fortunate enough to visit a variety of places and meet inspiring individuals who are making a difference in their respective fields. Looking back, it was a truly enriching and unforgettable week.

On the first day, Monday, June 12, 2023, we started our week by delving into research services and data management, led by Sand Caldrone. This session provided valuable insights into the world of data management and its importance in libraries. Later, we visited the Urbana Free Library, where we had the chance to interact with Lauren Chamblers, Joel Spencer, and Jordan Kahle, who run the teen program.

The second day, Tuesday, June 13, 2023, took us to Chicago, where we had the opportunity to visit Upshot Marketing and meet Liz Aviles, the senior vice president of strategy and cultural insights. Learning about marketing strategies and gaining insights into consumer behavior was enlightening, as it provided a different perspective on how libraries can engage with their communities. Later, we visited the American Library Association (ALA) headquarters and had a tour with Selling Guerra and Michael Dowling. Exploring the ALA’s headquarters gave us a deeper understanding of the organization’s impact and the resources available to librarians across the country.

On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, we traveled to the University of Chicago to explore their library system. The introduction to the Library and Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) was fascinating, and the tour of the Regenstein and Joe and Rika Mansueto libraries showcased the cutting-edge technologies and spaces available for research and study. Additionally, visiting the Chicago Public Library, particularly the Harold Washington branch and the YOUmedia lab with Taylor Bayless, was a truly moving experience. Witnessing teenagers actively engaging with the library and utilizing the space for learning and self-expression was a testament to the impact libraries can have on younger generations.

Thursday, June 15, 2023, was filled with insightful activities, including a tour of the campus instructional facility and a panel discussion on preservation services. These sessions deepened our understanding of the diverse roles libraries play in preserving and providing access to valuable resources. The post-program action plan allowed us to reflect on our learnings and discuss how we could implement them in our respective libraries and communities.

The final day, Friday, June 16, 2023, marked our departure to Arthur, Illinois. The tour of Amish country homes provided a unique glimpse into the rural American town and its rich cultural diversity. Visiting the Arthur Public Library, which serves both the English and Amish communities, highlighted the importance of libraries in fostering inclusivity and providing resources for diverse populations. Exploring downtown Arthur independently allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture and support the community by purchasing locally made honey from an Amish bee farm.

As the week came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and gratitude. The Mortenson Center 2023 program had been an incredible journey, filled with meaningful connections, valuable knowledge, and unforgettable experiences. I will miss the vibrant and supportive community that we formed throughout the program. However, I am excited to bring back what I have learned and experienced to my own library and community, with the hope of creating positive change and furthering the mission of libraries in the digital age.
