Week 1 Reflection

The first week started with the warm hospitality of the Mortensen Center staff, including Clara, Peggy, Uyen, Amani, and Barbara. Even though it was our initial week, we actively participated in various sessions and discussions. I would like to highlight three key points that I learned:

  1. Innovation in the library
  • We watched the video Managing Innovation – No innovator is an Island and had a constructive discussion about it. During this session, we explored the concept of innovation in libraries and were introduced to three principles. I fully agree with these principles and would like to share my own thoughts:
  1. The purpose of innovation is not to innovate ? Its primary goal should be the advancement of the library, ultimately improving the services offered to its users.
  2. The purpose of innovation is to solve problems ? Additionally, I believe that innovation also involves the creation of new things, such as smartphones, which have greatly enhanced our lives by providing convenience. As librarians, we actively seek out such.
  3. We can walk away from sunk costs ? In order to pursue innovation, it is necessary to invest resources boldly, recognizing that problem-solving requires allocation of adequate resources.

2. Emerging Trends in Reference and Outreach

  • This session inspired me to realize that we no longer have to be confined to sitting behind a reference desk. Instead, we can actively engage with library users. A remarkable example was shared during the session: the implementation of “Super Hero Trading Cards.” These collectible Marvel character trading cards featured library employees and served as a brilliant idea. They enable users to easily identify which librarian can provide specific assistance, facilitating approachable interactions. This innovative approach to reference services demonstrates how a single staff member’s idea can truly transform a library.

3. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • Lastly, I gained an understanding of the significance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). When envisioning the future of libraries, it is crucial to consider sustainability as a fundamental aspect. It has become clear to me that when a library’s vision and mission align with the SDGs, it can effectively fulfill a sustainable role in society.
