Reflections on My Third Week with the Mortenson Center Program

The week began with a memorable trip to Springfield, Illinois, where we had the privilege of visiting the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum. Stepping into the world of one of America’s greatest leaders was awe-inspiring. From the artifacts that once belonged to President Lincoln himself to the stories that came alive within the museum’s walls, I felt a deep connection to history and the enduring legacy of a remarkable individual. Our visit to the Illinois State Library was equally enlightening, immersing us in the world of literature and the power of knowledge.

Back at the Mortenson Center, the learning continued with sessions that left an indelible mark on my professional journey.

Anne Craig’s expertise in grant writing opened my eyes to the immense potential for collaboration. Armed with valuable insights and practical advice, I felt empowered to pursue funding opportunities that could propel my library’s projects to new heights.

The introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Clara Chu was a mind-bending experience. Exploring the ways in which AI is reshaping the library landscape was both fascinating and thought-provoking. AI holds immense promise for revolutionizing the way we engage with our patrons.

Our visit to the OCLC campus provided a unique opportunity to witness the inner workings of a leading library network. Touring the data center and services operations center was a humbling experience, as I gained a deeper appreciation for the infrastructure that supports our digital age. The OCLC library, archive, and museum tour further emphasized the profound impact libraries have on preserving knowledge.

The week concluded with visits to the OSU Thompson Library, the OSU Research Common, and the Westerville Public Library. These tours provided valuable insights into the diverse services and resources available to library patrons. Exploring the various facilities and witnessing firsthand the innovation and dedication of library professionals reinforced my passion for this field and the incredible potential for creating meaningful connections within our communities.

As I eagerly anticipate the weeks to come, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and a renewed sense of purpose. The Mortenson Center Programs have undoubtedly enriched my professional life and opened doors to new possibilities. I am excited to embark on the next phase of this adventure and continue the pursuit of excellence in librarianship.
