Second week refelction

It was such a great week that consist various knowledge and information. Our field visit to Chicago was amazing opportunity to learn, explore, and gain new experience.

We visited Chicago public library, American library association, Upshot, and the University of Chicago. And because I’m interested in marketing and advocacy, in this reflection I will talk about our visit to Upshot agency.

Every day I keep asking my self if I’m a librarian or marketer I really like to work in both fields and the link between them, this visit helps me to get a clear answer about this question.

First of all, I will give a short description of this agency then I will discuss the role of librarian and information specialist in the marketing agency.

Upshot agency believes that they should provide an environment conducive to collaboration and fostering ideas, fill it up with smart, creative, motivated people and let them do their thing. They believe that managing is less about managing and more about coaching, supporting and clearing bottlenecks. Upshot. (2018, June 3). Retrieved from https://upshot.agency/who-we-are

Additionally, Upshot agency worked with various clients such as Google, Starbucks, P&G …etc.

When we arrived Upshot agency we met Liz Aviles (President Market Intelligence). She was like an inspirational person for me. In the beginning, she talked about her job mission and vision. She and her colleague work purposes are to empower the Upshot agency with consumer and marketplace intelligence designed to spark new ideas for strategic and creative development.

Also, she presented market intelligence services and priorities, which involve finding new business, get smart/ need to know, research for concept support, competitive intelligence, consumer and industry trends, current awareness, and press and media awareness / thought leadership/ publishing.

The really interesting thing that Liz shared with as is her insights reports with a different company such as

  • Cause marketing: An Upshot POV (Constellation Brands)
  • Starbucks branded solutions (Channel trends and insights report)
  • Netflix Users 2018

From Liz presentation, I think the librarian should thinking out of the library borders over than the books and traditional services and being more creative by using the valuable knowledge and the information that they know on building a new concept of libraries role in the society. Our field is unique and wide we work every day with the knowledge and all of the people believe that the knowledge is power. All librarians should use this power on creating a valuable learning experience for the users.

And as Liz said you should

  • Align your priorities with the organisation
  • Embrace strategy, not tradition
  • Be flexible
  • Be a brand
  • Be paranoid
  • Be a competitive advantage

In this regards, I want to link between what I learn in upshot agency by sharing my work experience in library marketing. One of the most popular events that I conducted in the Main library last month is (Reading Bazar). Bazar means a marketplace or shopping quarter, especially one in the Middle East. This marketplace was included 15 bookshops that sale various reading lover products. The first thing that I did to start this event is creating a brand and logo, contacting the shops and designing the marketplace booths. Also, the event consisted of books discussion and music.

And these are some pictures and video from the event:
