3nd week : Fair Use Workshop and Sustainable Development Goal

fair use

Fair Use Workshop was conducted by Sarah Benson who is the copyright librarian of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Copyright is the sensitive issue for the librarian. We have to keep track of the users and authors right everyday. In the library, we deal with the author’s creation and it would be taking more caution. Furthermore, not only the information is created rapidly, but also the interface which contain the information is continuously created and we have to get used to it.

But as for the fair use, if it is not a profitable like the research or education, it can be used. Examples of fair use in United States copyright law include commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, and scholarship.

As Sustainable Development Goal, the fair use as the library is really important. We have to think and make another methods about how we can deliver our materials well in the boundary of the fair use. It can make us to be a specialist as a librarian who deal with sensitive

copyright materials. To defend our user’s right for use the material equally, the library has to be a leader.

Then What number is matched? It’s #4 Quality Education.

The user who is able to afford money can buy every book. But who isn’t has to be borrow at the library. It is the fair environment to everybody who wants the information for the research. As the librarian, we need to be more sensitive for the fair use and make the boundary of the fair use bigger to provide high quality of the information.
